Choosing the Correct Extended Lip Strike Size for Your Door
When it comes to door hardware, the details matter—especially when ensuring your door functions properly and looks its best. One often overlooked but crucial piece of hardware is the strike plate, specifically the extended lip strike. This piece can make a big difference in how your door operates, especially if you're dealing with thicker doors, wider casings, or decorative moldings. In this post, we’ll walk you through how to choose the correct extended lip strike size for your door.
What is an Extended Lip Strike?
An extended lip strike is a specialized strike plate designed for doors with deeper door frames or wider trim moldings. The “lip” of the strike extends further than a standard strike plate, ensuring that the latch properly engages with the strike without rubbing against or damaging the molding.
Stone Harbor Hardware Extend Lip Strike Sizes and Finishes
At Stone Harbor Hardware, we have a variety of extended lip strike sizes available; each of which featuring several finish options to choose from. The six sizes of extended lip strikes that we offer in our inventory include 1-1/2 inches, 1-3/4 inches, 2 inches, 2-1/2 inches, 3 inches, and 4 inches.
Our extended lip strike sizes are determined by measuring from the center of the installation screw holes to the end of the strike plate’s lip. Due to the center of installation screw holes measuring 1/2 inches from the edge of the strike plate opposite of the lip, the overall length of the strike plate measures 1/2 inches more than its named size. All of our extended lip strikes measure 2-1/4 inches in height.
All six extended lip strike sizes are available in the following finishes: oil-rubbed bronze, satin nickel, antique nickel, polished chrome, satin chrome, polished brass, antique brass, and matte black. These finish options make it easy to match the new extended strike with your existing door locks and home hardware.
Why Proper Sizing Matters
Choosing the correct extended lip strike size ensures that your door operates smoothly and prevents long-term damage to your door and trim. An improperly sized strike can lead to excessive wear, making it harder for your door to latch properly over time. Furthermore, a strike that is too short can allow the latch to damage your door molding, while a strike that is too long may interfere with the aesthetics of your door frame.
Outfit Your Home with Extended Lip Strikes
An extended lip strike may seem like a small piece of hardware, but it plays a big role in the overall function and longevity of your door. Whether you’re dealing with thicker trim, decorative moldings, or wider jambs, selecting the right size can make all the difference.
